During a heartwarming event at a rally in Barua near Odisha’s Kendrapada on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left 66-year-old Kamala Moharana astonished as he bowed to touch her feet. Moharana had been recognized in Modi’s Mann Ki Baat radio show the previous year for her remarkable initiative in transforming waste into useful products.

Recognizing Efforts in Waste Management

“Friends, converting waste into wealth is a crucial aspect of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Kamala Moharana, a sister from Kendrapada district in Odisha, leads a self-help group (SHG). The women in this group craft various items like baskets and mobile stands from milk pouches and other plastic packaging,” PM Modi had said on air in February of last year. Moharana had also sent a rakhi made from recycled materials to the Prime Minister.

A Memorable Gesture

Reports revealed that Moharana expressed her desire to touch Modi’s feet, but the Prime Minister unexpectedly bowed and touched her feet instead. She remarked that this was an unforgettable moment for her.

Upcoming Elections in Odisha

Odisha is set to vote in the fourth and final phase of Assembly elections on June 1, coinciding with the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The state has 21 Lok Sabha seats and a 147-member Assembly.

Previous Election Results

In the 2019 elections, the BJD secured 12 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP won eight, and the Congress managed one. In the Assembly, the BJD won 113 seats, the BJP 23, the Congress nine, the CPI(M) one, and an Independent candidate also won a seat.

Modi’s Critique of Odisha’s Governance

During his assemblies, Head of the state Modi has affirmed that Odisha’s social character and language are in peril, censuring the BJD government for compounding what is happening. “Odisha’s character, its language and writing are in emergency today. The BJD government has deteriorated the circumstance in the state. Individuals won’t endure this any more. This time there will be an adjustment of Odisha,” Modi expressed in a meeting with CNBC-TV18.
