Argentina, the reigning Copa America champions, marched into the tournament final with a convincing 2-0 victory over Canada on Tuesday. Despite facing early pressure, Argentina weathered the storm and eventually found the back of the net through Julian Alvarez in the 22nd minute.

The young forward capitalized on a long pass from Rodrigo De Paul, maneuvering past a defender and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau. Lionel Messi, ever the goal threat, doubled Argentina’s lead in the second half. Enzo Fernandez’s shot from distance found its way to Messi, who cleverly deflected it past Crepeau for his 109th international goal.

This victory extends Argentina’s unbeaten streak to 10 games and sets them up for a potential record-breaking 16th Copa America title. Their opponents in the final, to be played on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida, will be determined by the outcome of Wednesday’s match between Uruguay and Colombia.

Messi Inches Closer to International Goal Record

The iconic Messi, making his 38th Copa America appearance, finally got on the scoresheet after a subdued performance in the quarterfinals. He came close to scoring on several occasions throughout the match, but his efforts were just wide or sailed over the crossbar.

Argentina Overcomes Early Challenge and Difficult Pitch Conditions

Canada put up a fight early on, but Argentina’s experienced backline held firm. The playing surface at MetLife Stadium, a temporary grass installation, seemed to hinder both teams with its heavy and uneven footing.

Alvarez Opens the Scoring, Messi Capitalizes on Opportunity

Argentina’s first goal came from a well-executed long pass by De Paul, finding Alvarez in stride. The young attacker calmly controlled the ball and slotted it past Crepeau. The second goal involved a series of quick passes, with Messi ultimately deflecting Fernandez’s shot to secure the win.

Canada Loses Key Player, Argentina’s Goalkeeper Shines

Canada suffered a blow when their star player, Alphonso Davies, limped off with an injury in the second half. Despite the setback, Canada continued to threaten Argentina’s goal, with Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi forcing saves from goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Argentina now sets their sights on achieving a historic feat – winning back-to-back Copa America titles alongside their 2022 World Cup triumph. They aim to emulate Spain’s accomplishment of winning the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, alongside the World Cup title in 2010.
